Introduction to the Kingdom

The Kingdom of Komnen can be described as a diverse and unique monarchy, with some areas of society strictly enforced, and some free and open to all peoples. The government that runs it during the time of The General's Army is still run by an age old royal family, which rules with the help of a large system of government officials and regional authorities. The head of this government is the King of Komnen, who makes all the executive decisions and is assisted by his advisors. The head of the military and the King's second in command is the Prime General. The Prime General is one of the most powerful men in the country, and is in control of all things military and defense related.  The Kingdom of Komnen is thousands of years old, and is the inheritor of the Incan Empire, which existed on the continent in ancient times.

Komnen itself is one country, located on the continent known as Atarica, in the eastern hemisphere of Earth. By itself it has four neighboring countries; the nations of Pagaly, Seljuk, Aztlan and Matsovinya. Komnen is a vastly diverse country geographically, with many native forestlands, plains, mountainous areas and even an eastern desert. Its people are equally as diverse, with descendents from nearly every eastern nation imaginable, all come to Komnen via immigration or war. Its cities are large and very numerous; almost fifteen major cities across the country. Komnen’s industry and economy are particularly strong, especially in the western part of the country where the population is highest, and many factories produce goods that are shipped around the world. The industry of the Komnen makes engaging in foreign conflicts that much easier, an ability well used in The General's Army.

The state religion for Komnen is the Church of the Holy Prospector, a religion with deep roots in ancient Incan tradition. The head of the church is the Prime Prospector, who holds the title of supreme defender of the church. Although he holds many yearly sermons and organizes all church related events, the Prime Prospector does not determine questions of dogma or church teaching. The principal ecclesiastical authority on this matter are the Priests of Truth. Though the Church of the Holy Prospector is powerful, it is only one of many religions within Komnen. There are many millions of followers of local religions, churches that adhere to a certain region and their customs.

Komnen has an abundance of natural resources; lumber from the northern forests, many types of iron ore from its mountainous regions, food products from the dense farmlands and even a small amount of oil and coal from the eastern desert. Komnen is a comparatively rich country, and sustains a high population as well as a strong national gross income. However Komnen imports have a shady history in being lax in international law. Many goods imported from other countries to Komnen come from suspicious sources and possibly illegal sources as well.

Komnens military is world renowned for its colorful history, as well as its tactical prowess and dedication to planning. The Komnen military known formally as The General's Army is an organization with a long history, dating back to only two centuries after the nation was formed. For much of Komnen history, The General's Army was a terrible drain on the economy, their tactics were outdated, and their response to threats and international tension was embarrassingly slow. But during the years after the Great War of the 1920’s, The General's Army began to reform itself, having learned many lessons from the ferocious fighting. It is only in the past ten years or so that the General's Army has begun to rebuild its reputation, as a much more capable, tactically adept, and well prepared fighting force.

The Kingdom of Komnen is really, an alliance of nations brought together under its central ruler, the nation of Komnen. Members of the Kingdom include Komnens territory neighbor Pagaly, as well as its island protectorate known as the Komnen Isles. Across the sea, Komnen has a few members in the Kingdom, such as Acuria to the east, and the Ling Shuon islands to the west. Though the Kingdom members work closely in terms of economic trade, military protection, and scientific advancement, many Kingdom countries do not look so fondly on the fatherland of Komnen. Several of them have in the past been forced into the Kingdom, under the iron heel of Komnens more violent predecessors.

Komnen in a nutshell is a country, working to redeem itself of its past embarrassments. The Great War and government incompetence severely crippled Komnen’s reputation and its overseas image, an image that over the past few years it has been working to rebuild.  Komnen is still run by a monarchy, but is well orchestrated and regulated by a number of advisors to the king, and regional governors.  I hope you enjoyed the introduction to the Kingdom of Komnen; the next entry will be about the early history of the Kingdom of Komnen, and how it was first formed.

Seeing as Atarica is small and surrounded by water I would expect the Navy of Komnen to be very important as well.

The Komnen Navy is important, but for Komnen, The Generals Army encompasses the armed forces as a whole, which can then be broken down into different services. The navy is actually very important, they fight most of the battles throughout Komnen history.
