Early History of Komnen

Starting from the period at which Atarica civilizations began to regularly keep a calendar; Komnen was a country in its infant stages. Long before modern man existed, there was a primitive but colossal civilization known as the Incan Empire.

The ancient Incan Empire was the undisputed ruler of the continent, and much of the surrounding landmasses. It was an empire that stretched from the Ling-Shuon Islands of the west, to the snow plagued hills of Acuria to the east. Building massive spires of clay and granite, the Incan were masters of the world, with armies of slaves to do their bidding. However an empire as corrupt as was the Incan empire, can never last. Several cities that had been forced into vassalry rose up against the Incan lords. Supported by thousands of disgruntled slaves, the Incan centers of power were toppled, and the capital of the land, Constantine, was completely burned to the ground. The Incan empire was destroyed over a long period which is said to have begun around 400 CE and ended around 520 CE.

For nearly four hundred years, the entire continent was thrown into barbarism and chaos, civilization seemingly imploding in on itself. There was little that could save the Incan Empire, and it seemed as though human society was most likely to revert back to its animalistic instincts. However the human spirit and desire to bond in community, glued the human remnants into small towns and cities. Eventually these settlements grew in size and power, becoming named after the great cities of the Incan Empire. Constantine, the once mighty seat of the empire, sprung up once more only a few miles away from where the actual city was once located.

The cities began to expand their influence over the land, and harness its power. Without the masses of indentured slaves that the Incan empire had, these new city states were more inclined to use machinery and technological advancement. Basic tools became more advanced, weapons of war were improved, and the secret of metallurgy was finally discovered. Over time, each city was a powerhouse of wealth, industry, and population. The sheer amount of goods and wealth present in each city inevitably lead to conflict. Various city states vied for power, and contested one another in a mad bid for the resources of the land.

It was in the year of 1125 CE that the city that had once been the seat of the Incan Lords, rose to power. The King of Constantine, having made many clever ties to his neighbors, assaulted the western city states, winning much territory in southern Atarica. What separated this new engagement from the many wars fought between the city states was that Constantine had made an alliance with two other states, the cities of Myestras and Barcan. Fueled by destiny and possessing an army that dwarfed the other city states, the triple alliance of these three cities conquered territory after territory throughout all of Atarica. The process was long, and took almost eighty years, but over time each city state succumbed to the will of this alliance.

Over the next hundred years, the city states eventually coalesced into the body of one single nation. There were many conflicts and internal fighting between city states, but none could resist the will of the mightiest city, Constantine, and by the year 1300 CE a stable governmental system was in place. It was in this time that a powerful leader joined the new nation, destined to lead it to glory.

Comnenus the Great lived during the 13th century, and was the man who almost single handedly formed the Kingdom of Komnen.  From its violent beginnings Constantine had become the largest state on Atarica, with a geographical area and a wealth greater than all other states. It spanned the southern shores of Atarica, and was possessed of a massive population due to the abundant grain yields of the southern country. However terrible lawlessness and robbery was rampant throughout Constantine and the surrounding land and much of the population had not felt the touch of civilization. It was this that Comnenus set out to correct, when he fought his way to the highest position, amongst the lords of Constantine, using ruthlessness and cunning to get his way. He then created a new position of power for himself, wrought from the ancient tradition of the Incan Lords. He named himself King of Constantine, a position which offered him unwavering loyalty from his followers and unquestioning authority. As the King of the greatest of the city states, Comnenus eventually became King of the entire country.

Comnenus was a man who, though he had tried for years, was unable to create life. He had tried throughout his life to have a son, who could continue on his line, but to no avail. Therefore, when he became the new King of Constantine, Comnenus gave his country a name, Komnen, the name he had chosen for his son who would not be born. In this way, the Kingdom of Komnen became the child of King Comnenus, and has remained so ever since.
