Chaos In Libya
Friday, February 25, 2011 at 12:53PM Over the past week, there have been outrageous battles going on between the citizens of Libya and its government. The people of Libya are unhappy with Moammar Gadhafi's four decades of rule, and want to overthrow his dictatorship in order to have a fair government. Gadhafi has echoed his minion’s cries by cutting off power and internet to those who are rebelling against him. Internet service was briefly shut down completely to everyone in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, but has since been renewed in some areas.
Social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as various blogs, have been the only means of Libyans communicating their current situation. Without that, they had nothing. Fortunately, the word was spread across the world before Gadhafi could quiet his country.
Gadhafi has been secretly building his own loyal forces over the years and is using them to fight against his own country to remain in power. Thousands of people are dying and it could turn into a complete genocide if something does not change soon. Airports are being bombed, innocent citizens are being held hostage and being killed, people are terrified to walk the streets in fear of their lives; there was an underground prison just found in Benghazi. Those who are rebelling are being targeted and taken out in masses, but the brave Libyan people are fighting for their rights. This country needs support before its ruler wipes out the only cause of his power; the people.
Why now, though? Why, after four decades of Moammar el-Gadhafi dictating their lives, is Libya rebelling now? It has been suggested that they are following Egypt’s lead, demanding a new leader, but, nonetheless, this act seems far overdue. No matter what the reason being, this country wants a change and they should never have to suffer the losses they are enduring now in order to receive it. Gadhafi’s violent reaction to his countries protests was completely unexpected by anyone, and something that was unseen in Egypt’s rebellion. Despite the shock of the governments answer to its people, however, it is unacceptable and should be acknowledged by everyone so that Libya can start fresh with a new leader, like Egypt is trying to do. Support from Libya’s fellow countries is needed to stop this violence, and to provide it with a better lifestyle to help build a brighter future for this country.
