The End Is Coming, Or Is It?
Thursday, March 10, 2011 at 8:24PM Conspiracy theories from the end of the world to the existence of creatures outside of this world circulate around the globe on a regular basis. For every solid theory or scientific fact that there ever was, there is a conspiracy theory right behind it. There are certain theories such as Y2K that drive one quarter of the world to build bomb shelters and stock up on canned food, while the other three quarters of the world either judges these frenzied people, doesn’t care, or just haven’t heard about it. Well, there is a new doomsday conspiracy theory in the works that claims on December 21st, 2012, the world will come to an end. Everyone remembers how the Y2K scare ended up, but could this just be another false alarm, or truly, the end of human existence?
Who is to actually determine that 2012 is a conspiracy theory, though? Each person has their own opinion, but no one being can determine what is right and what is wrong. There are countless theories that point toward the world ending which are based on scientific facts and just pure myth. For a person who solely believes in science and will not settle for anything less than solid proof, there are scientific theories that back up 2012. For those who will believe anything, the myths and facts together make the situation even more real.
Scientists have studied the Mayan calendar and believe the cycle of this calendar began August 13th 3114 BC (0.0.0.0.1), and that it will end on December 21st, 2012. The Mayan calendar has predicted events such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, (whether that was an inside job or not is a whole other conspiracy theory in itself) and has been astronomically correct for millions of years. Other scientific theories include the Bible code, specific alignment of planets, global warming, and the world’s greatest natural disasters such as tsunamis and volcanic eruptions, which all point towards the end of the world.
It is clear that the world is suffering under the weight of humanity and Mother Nature herself, but whether that means human existence will cease in 2012 or just cause chaos is not clear yet. But, again, these are all just theories that everyone has the choice of believing in or not. As for 2012 being the next Y2K, it is unlikely as there seems to be more evidence that this theory could pose an actual threat to the world, and it is not solely based on assumption.
