Everything is Automatic

One of the first concerts I have ever attended was when I went to see the Matthew Good Band play at the Civic Centre during The Exhibition with my dad. I was definitely younger than 12 and did not have an appreciation for his music quite yet. In fact, I’m surprised it took me this long to get it.

Now, when I say I didn’t have an appreciation for his music yet, I mean that I didn’t know any of his songs. I do remember that I did enjoy it and telling my dad that I thought it was “good”. I guess I was always of a musical mind. Some years later, I would fall in love.

I was at the drag strip in Lucksville, sitting on the bleachers as I heard “Hello Time Bomb” soar through the speakers. I knew it was Matthew Good by his distinctive voice, but I don’t think I ever realized how much I liked that song. Thus, it was stuck in my head for the whole weekend until I got home where I would immediately hunt down the title so I could listen to it over and over.

Every Matthew Good song can strike a chord with me. This man is no doubt gifted beyond teaching ability. He is nothing but a true artist, writing such deep but catchy melodies with lyrics that call to your most personal feelings or to the entire corrupt civilization. Another thing I can retain from the memory of seeing him perform live was that it was very political. Simply from his music, I feel like I can tell that Matthew Good is a learned man thus I see how he is a soul that can be wrapped up and bothered by politics.

It bothers me to high hell that my friend laughed at me when I told her that I was into Matthew Good. And I know exactly why. Because he’s just one of those Canadian artists that only Canadians would listen to, or know of. Well, that’s great! Out of all the artists playing out there today, Matthew Good is the one I’d like to claim the most. Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne, Hedley and all of them could be American for all I care. Matthew Good is the one for us to be proud of.

I find it almost disappointing to learn that he boycotts the Juno Awards, as he is more deserving of them than the likes of Drake or the others I just mentioned. But listen to his music and words, and I’m sure it won’t surprise you in the least.

Those are definitely good ones. I find it really hard to pick a favorite with him. I know that "The Future is X-Rated" has got to be close for me, though. "Weapon" is also a really great track.

I believe Matthew Good started his musical career shortly after he was diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder. Interesting side note.

The first time I saw Matthew Good was at the old Ottawa Congress Centre about (oh, god) ten years ago. He ended the show early because someone threw a shoe at his head and said, "This isn't a f—ing Slayer concert!" before he stormed off the stage. As it happened, the guy who threw the shoe was a friend of mine and I made him buy me lunch for ruining my concert!

Just some things to watch out for in your writing: faulty predication, faulty parallelism, and style rules for numbers.
