Movies, Mermaid Skirts, and Garden Benches
Friday, January 28, 2011 at 12:57AM Most people probably think the monarchy is antiquated, out-dated, whatever. But William and Kate's wedding is set to prove everyone wrong. It's got the whole world talking- and, here in Canada, the talk is going non-stop. the design consultants on canada AM think Kate would be flattered by a mermaid skirt; the government will be spending roughly the same amount on William and Kate's gift that they spent on the approaching-ludicrously-priced almost $20,000 garden bench they sent to Charles and Camilla. (20K, seriously?!) But, while the excess is full front, so are the counter reminders that the Royals are people just like any of us.
Royalty have been in the movies alot recently- and the latest outing, 'The King's Speech', could not have come at a better time. Even if I weren't the Royalty nut that I am, I probably would have cried anyway when I saw it. It reminded me, as it should remind alot of people, that the Queen wasn't originally supposed to be Queen- she was supposed to live out a nice family life with a loving mother and an equally loving, soft-spoken and tongue-tied father who embraced what he was shoved into and became a national hero. Basically, with this reminder, we should start to look on the upcoming royal wedding not as an extravagance, but as a truly wonderful love story from a thoroughly normal family of extraordinary people.
